Things to Do

This little town is so adorable, even if all you do is walk around, you'll have fun. However, there are several activities that you must do. Iv'e included them here along with a few others.

Durnstein Castle

Visit Durnstein Castle Ruins: Hike up to the Durnstein Castle ruins, perched on a hill overlooking the town and the Danube River. Enjoy panoramic views of the Wachau Valley from the top. The hike takes approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on your pace. I did not get a chance to do this since I had too much shopping, wine tastings, and apricot tasting planned. But make sure to add this to your list if you have time.

Wine & Apricot Tasting

Wine Tasting: Durnstein is renowned for its vineyards and wineries. Take part in a wine tasting session at one of the local wineries to hear about the history of the vineyards and the families that own them. Of course, you must sample the famous Wachau wines, including Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and learn about the winemaking process. Don't be surprised when the Riesling you taste here is not sweet, that is the way it is supposed to be in this region. Another favorite is Apricot Schnapps tasting at the abbey. Don't miss this one it is really fun! You will also taste apricot jam and candies.

Bike Ride in the Wachau Valley: Rent a bicycle or get one from the river cruise ship and explore the Wachau Valley on two wheels. Cycle through the vineyards, quaint villages, and scenic paths along the Danube River. Stop by some of the local wineries for tastings or take a leisurely break by the river.
