Location: European Union + Additional Countries
Beginning sometime in 2025, US Citizens will be required to obtain an ETIAS before entering a Schengen country plus a few others. Here are some basics about the EU ETIAS.
Here are the key eligibility criteria for American citizens.
Nationality - The ETIAS is exclusively available to citizens of countries, including the USA, that have visa-free access to the Schengen Area.
Purpose of Visit - The ETIAS authorization is designed for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. It covers purposes like tourism, business, transit, and short-term medical visits.
Passport Requirements - Applicants need a valid, machine-readable e-passport (passport with a chip). This passport should remain valid for the duration of your stay in Europe.
Age Considerations - The ETIAS is open to all ages. Travelers under the age of 18 or over the age of 70 can receive their ETIAS free of charge.
Apply online, pay a small fee, (currently 7 EUR), and get approved within minutes or, at most, a few days. Once approved, your ETIAS will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
This is not a guarantee of entry, the border agents make that decision as always. But this should make the process easier.
Countries Requiring ETIAS
With ETIAS, you can visit many countries across Europe. These fall into different categories based on whether they’re in the Schengen Area, the EU, or associated with the Schengen Agreement.
