Funky Food and Beer Walk in Reykjavik Iceland

Updated: Nov 6, 2022

On my last trip to Iceland, I took a tour called the Funky Food and Beer Walk. I highly recommend it so I'm not going to give it all away here but I'll share the highlights.

Lalli was a wonderful guide with great stories and interesting tidbits of history. It was easy to see how much he loves sharing the history and food of Iceland with visitors. He has a history tour as well so I'll try that one next time.

The tour was not only entertaining but provided plenty of food and ended with a craft beer flight at a craft beer pub. You will taste 9 traditional foods and 5 craft beers on this tour and you will walk the town learning about history, the Icelandic people, where to shop, Reykjavik, and of course, the food and beer.

The Tour Begins at Hallgrimskirkja

We started the tour at Hallgrimskirkja and walked over to the Loki Cafe for a selection of traditional food including the famous fermented shark. Mainly for tourists now, it was once eaten by the Icelandic people as a last resort to avoid starving. Lalli will fill you in on this piece of history. Here we learned about the meat, fish, and bread eaten today. We also learned about how it is prepared and how it should be eaten. A really fun experience.

Next, we stopped by Reykjavik Street Food for another selection of traditional food and sampled both meat, fish, and bread including soup and stew. While they prepared our table we were invited into a beautiful gallery with photographs of the Highlands and the Northern Lights.

I'm sure you have heard of the Icelandic hot dog as a must-try experience. By the time we got there, I was already full and split the hot dog with a friend. You must have it with everything on it to get the real experience. The hot dog is 80% lamb and the remaining 20% is beef and pork. It was really tasty.

Lalli also pointed out the Icelandic Punk Museum as we passed by. This museum is located in repurposed bathroom stalls. We didn't go in but it made for some great photos.

The Final Stop and a Beer Flight

The last stop was at Skuli for craft beer including a wonderful raspberry sour. This offering changes based on seasons and batches. Lalli left us here with some words of advice on how to save money and have a great time in Reykjavik.

I've taken many tours but this one stuck with me and was really fun, reasonably priced, and engaging. I highly recommend this tour when you are in Reykjavik.
