Must-See Sites

Chapel Bridge and Water Tower (Pictured above): The Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbrücke, is not only one of Lucerne's most iconic landmarks but it is also Europe's oldest wooden bridge, dating back to the 14th century. As you walk across its timber planks, adorned with vibrant paintings depicting Swiss history and mythology, you'll feel like you're stepping back in time. At the bridge's end stands the Water Tower, a medieval fortification that has served as a prison, treasury, and torture chamber throughout its storied past. Today, it's a symbol of Lucerne's resilience and a popular spot for visitors to take in panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Swiss Museum of Transport: For those fascinated by the ingenuity of transportation, the Swiss Museum of Transport is a must-visit. Located just a short distance from Lucerne's city center, this interactive museum showcases Switzerland's rich history of innovation in transport, from the earliest horse-drawn carriages to cutting-edge locomotives and aircraft. Visitors can explore a vast collection of vehicles, simulators, and hands-on exhibits, offering a fascinating journey through time and technology.

The Lion Monument

Lion Monument: Carved into a sheer rock face, the Lion Monument, or Löwendenkmal, is a powerful tribute to the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution. Sculpted in the early 19th century by Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen, the monument depicts a dying lion resting its head on a shield bearing the Swiss coat of arms. It's a poignant reminder of sacrifice and bravery, and visitors often come to pay their respects and contemplate the solemn beauty of this masterpiece.
