Tasty Treats in Budapest, Hungary

Location: Budapest, Hungary

Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, and Honeymoons

When I go to a new destination, I like to see the must-see sights, to be honest, so I can say I did. But my favorite places tend to be the ones most don’t see, the small bistros, city parks, where I can meet new people, learn about the culture, and hear their stories. Part of the culture of a destination is the food and I always try to taste some of the favorites. I have tasted a few that I will not try again. If you see me, ask about yemas of Avila Spain. But mostly it is a great way to experience the culture of a new land.

Central Market

Budapest is full of wonders. Regardless of your reason to visit, whether it is to take in the architecture, soak in the history, or enjoy the natural sites, do not leave without indulging in the authentic dishes served throughout the nation. Your palette will be dancing with the rich flavors. To guide you to some of the best traditional food and spots to get it, I have created a list of tasty treats for your next trip Budapest.

  1. You cannot leave Budapest without trying one its most traditional foods, and most popular food, langos. It is a flatbread that is deep-fried in fat and can be served plain or smothered with cheese blends and other flavorful toppings. They are available nearly everywhere, but we recommend heading to the Central Market Hall.

  2. Sausages are a staple in Hungary you will find them in all types of food. The best place to get sausage is the Central Market Hall. In this 3-story building filled with stalls you can find all types of sausage. You must try the csabai kolbasz, it is a bit spicy so keep that in mind. Hungarians do love paprika.

  3. Gyumolcsleves is a cold fruit soup served prior to your meal. The most popular is the cherry version.

  4. Of course, you simply must have Hungary’s national dish, Gulyas or what we would call Goulash. There is this cute little hidden gem in the city’s Castle District called Baltazar Budapest. Stop in there for your goulash.

  5. For dessert, try a shareable treat called Kurtoskalacs (Chimney Cake). It is a sweet crunchy dough that is served hot. You can sprinkle cinnamon, and walnuts on it This is a Christmas Market favorite.

  6. Hungarian Unicum, a famous liquor in the country is an herbal bitter that aids indigestion, which you will find helps tremendously after delving into all the spicy street foods. Head to the Zwack Museum to learn all about the miracle liquor.

  7. Anyone who loves the age-old delicacy marzipan, I recommend a visit to Szamos Marzipan, a museum in honor of the artists Mátyás Szamos and Károly Szabó, the artists that started shaping marzipan into the shapes of flowers and other beautiful creations in the 1930s.

  8. If you just adore delis, you must go to Mangalica & Társai Húspatika. This deli has everything from assorted salamis, cured hams, and more. This deli stands today in dedication to the curly-haired Mangalica pig, which is a domesticated, extremely furry Hungarian swine.
