Vaporetto: Getting Around Venice, Italy

Updated: Dec 31, 2023

Location: Venice Italy

Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Families, and Honeymoons

In Venice, the best way to discover this enchanting city is by walking or taking water transportation, as there are no roads for cars or buses. Here are a few ways to navigate the city. The video will show various modes mentioned below with a special focus on the Vaporetto, how to use it, and its costs.

Vaporetto

The Vaporetto or waterbus is a convenient and affordable way to travel around Venice's waterways. The ACTV company operates the Vaporetto system, and you can buy tickets at the ticket booths, onboard the boats, or using the ACTV app. Tickets can be purchased for one trip or multiple days. Vaporetto will even take you to the beaches. The airport is extra.

Water Taxi

If you want a faster and more luxurious way to travel around Venice, you can take a water taxi. They offer a more personalized service and can take you directly to your destination. Water taxi fares are not fixed, and the prices depend on the distance, time of day, and number of passengers. If you are not sure where the closest Vaporetto is to your hotel, grab a water taxi. Because you are on a timetable when heading back to the airport, a water taxi may be the best option for you on your way home.

Gondola

Gondolas are a classic mode of transportation in Venice, and they offer a romantic and scenic way to explore the city's canals. Gondolas are not regulated, so be prepared to negotiate with the gondoliers there or book a tour in advance, book online for a set price, or talk to the concierge at your hotel. Some of these are roundtrip for a nice relaxing or romantic experience as opposed to a transfer somewhere. Yes, it's touristy but a must-do. I'll do it again next time I'm there!

Walking

Venice is a pedestrian-friendly city, and walking is the best way to discover its hidden corners and historic landmarks. You will enjoy strolling the alleys and walking by the water but make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a map or GPS device to navigate the narrow streets and alleys. Be aware that some areas, like St Marks Square, flood during hightide so watch your step!

Pro Tip: Travel during shoulder season to avoid peak tourist season. The Vaporetto and water taxi services can be crowded during peak season, so plan accordingly and allow extra time to reach your destination.

There you have it. The best ways to get around Venice. Watch the video for more information on how to use the Vaporetto along with pictures and videos of the trip.
