What to Wear on a Safari in Kenya

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

Safaris are all about neutral. The secret is to go unnoticed by the wildlife for as long as possible. By keeping clothing colors as neutral and as light as possible, you will blend in better with the surrounding environment. Think Khaki, beige, light brown, and green as the best color palette for a safari. Aside from standing out to the animals, much like bright flowers draw the bees, darker and brighter clothing will attract unwanted mosquitoes, tsetse flies, and insects.

Clothing Considerations

Although you may be staying in luxury, meals are informal, so smart attire is not required

Comfortable is the name of the game in the bush. And you will want lightweight breathable clothing. Cotton is perfect but the lightweight wicking fabrics if you like them, will work. That said, ditch the bright white t-shirt and wear something that blends in.

For the evenings or on bush walks, a long sleeve neutral-colored shirt will serve to help with mosquitos and keeps the chill off at night. You'll experience nighttime game drives so long sleeves and long pants are a must. While we are on long pants, try the zip-off legs so that you will have both shorts and long pants. Layering is great for early morning or evening. Don't forget a jacket, and quite possibly a scarf, once that African sun goes down, it can get quite chilly., If you are traveling during the rainy season, make sure you wear a raincoat or something to keep you dry.

Pro Tip: It is illegal in some areas to wear camouflage clothing and in others, it will draw unwanted attention so it is best to stick with one color.

Let's talk hiking boots for a minute. You really don't want to have to pack these in your suitcase. The good news is, generally speaking, a good pair of sneakers or other sturdy closed-toed shoes will be fine for the hikes and game drives. Hiking sneakers would work too but remember it is likely to be hot during the day and you don't want the added issue of hot, heavy shoes so pick a pair that are light and comfortable. Sandals or flip flops will work for around the lodge.

Your head

You will need a hat. Remember, you are on the equator in Kenya. Everyone will have one to protect their face and eyes from the sun and the heat. It will also make game viewing easier. Make sure it has a brim and not just a baseball cap if your ears burn. Don't forget your sunglasses. If they are polarized all the better. If you wear glasses, bring an extra pair. It is very dusty so bring extra contact lens cleaner or a few extra pairs of lenses if you change them frequently.

Welcome to my world of overpacking. I have tried my best to avoid this and have found the answer. One of the great things about many of these lodges and camps is that they will wash your laundry. It is definitely worth the money.
Carry-on or Luggage?

Your Bags

Welcome to my world of overpacking. I have tried my best to avoid this and have found the answer. One of the great things about many of these lodges and camps is that they will wash your laundry. It is definitely worth the money. Bring a few pairs of shorts, pants, and shirts and wash them. Add undergarments, socks, jacket, swimsuit, and a layer of two and you are good to go.

Pro tip: bring enough undergarments, they will not wash them or anything complicated. Leave the favorite silk at home.

Checked bags are tricky. Most safaris allow a bag and carry-on but fly-in safaris will not allow hard-sided luggage, hard frame, or wheels. Always check before you being your packing. Like every other vacation pack, some clothing and important items in a carry-on just in case your suitcase is lost.

African safaris have so much to offer with the small villages, incredible animals, stunning views, and amazing sunsets. Dressing appropriately is not about fashion but comfort, experience, and protection. With a little prep, you can enjoy all of this and not have too much laundry to do when you get home.
